Shared hosting vs VPS vs Dedicated: which one do you need?
A practical guide to picking the right hosting type for your website, app or business — and when to upgrade.
Start with your workload
Shared hosting is ideal for brochure sites, blogs and small shops. You share a server with other customers, but modern NVMe servers make it fast and it costs a few dollars a month.
VPS gives you guaranteed CPU, RAM and disk plus root access. Choose it when you need custom software, Docker, or predictable performance under load.
Dedicated servers are single-tenant hardware. Pick one for large databases, virtualisation (Proxmox), or compliance requirements.
Rules of thumb
- Under ~25k visits/month and no custom stack → Shared or WordPress hosting
- Custom apps, APIs, staging, Docker → VPS
- Heavy databases, many VMs, strict isolation → Dedicated
